I would probably use them more for indirect traffic rather than for SEO purposes but I've created profile backlinks in forums before for boosting my web pages. My main traffic generation method has always been article marketing and SEO. If your time is limited, then consider paying someone to do the grunt work for you. I have a very good jobs / employment page I wanted to use to pull in traffic and get overflow but I am trying to develop a 'hub' around personal fulfillment (yeah, perhaps way too much work) but it appears to work against me in the PR (It's a startup site) And most forums have a ton of rules before you can post and links are a no-no until 20-25 posts. Article marketing is already a proven money making method but I definitely learned a lot from the 4DMMB course.
